Shrinking Cities Sie wählen, wählen Sie selbst Kurt Kranz

Contribution for the exhibition «Kurt Kranz - Die Programmierung des Schönen», 2010/2011 at Bauhaus Dessau

Kurz Kranz, one of the pioneers in serial and generated art, developed in the 1930ies a system to rasterize images. Using a hybrid approach between mathematics and painting, Kranz calculated the degree of rasterization depending on the distance of the viewer to the object. The same effect, for example, applies to public LED screens, where the image is sharp only if it's viewed by a certain distance.

The installation applies Kranz' logic and creates portraits with an adjustable raster size. After pushing a button, the portrait gets printed on a A4 laser printer.
